Common Things That Trigger Eczema
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, can be a long-term condition affecting the skin.
Eczema occurs because of a hypersensitivity reaction (similar to an allergy), in which the skin reacts to certain triggers.
The following can be common eczema triggers –
-
Irritants: soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants, and the biggest desensitiser to skin, Perfumes.
-
Juices from fresh fruits, or vegetables can also act as triggers.
-
Allergens: dust mites, pets, pollens, mould, dandruff.
-
Hot and cold temperatures: hot weather, high and low humidity, perspiration from exercise.
-
Foods: dairy products, eggs, nuts and seeds, soy products, wheat.
-
Stress: it is not a cause of eczema but can make symptoms worse.
-
Hormones: women can experience worsening of eczema symptoms at times when their hormone levels are changing, for example during pregnancy and at certain points in their menstrual cycle.
All of the above can trigger excessive itching and heat which in turn causes you to scratch, irritating the skin even more and also by removing more layers. You can cause an infection in the skin by doing so!
Probably the worst complaint by eczema sufferers is the itching!!!!
Rebuilding Your Natural Skin Defences
Firstly the surface skin needs to be protected from further irritants and the elements in order to be relieved & soothed. This first step is the most important in order to bring about any relief and results to a stressed and irritated eczema/dermatitis skin.
You need to get back to basics where ‘less is more’. Slowly building your protective barrier of the skin so it doesn’t have such sensitive reactions. What you put on the surface of the skin is important. In a lot of skins which are at a reactive stage, even wearing clothes that may have been washed in a perfumed detergent can trigger the skin to flare up. Possibly causing itchy, red, sore and inflamed eczema reactions. When the skin gets this irritated the ‘less is more’ scenario definitely comes into play. All sorts of reactions can be triggered in individuals on the surface of the skin that might not even necessarily be the area of skin that usually gets the eczema in the first place.
Eczema Relief
Eczema is generally an internal factor that shows itself externally.
Internal nutrients and supplements are a great place to start. Depending on your dietary requirements or whether you can take fish supplements or vege capsules there is an option for you. Remember you are what you eat!!
Essential Fatty Acids are the first stepping stone needed in skin health. Repairing, desensitising and balancing reactive, inflamed, sensitised skins. Omega 3 & 6’s, found in foods naturally like your fatty fish (salmon, sardines) and in avocado oil for example. You can also take flax seed capsules which also give you omega’s 3,6 and 9 with no fishy aftertaste if this is an issue for you.
This is also a good idea even as a precaution over the harsh winter season when the elements of extreme hot and cold conditions are more taxing on your skin’s barrier than any other time of the year. What the essential fatty acids do is feed the skin internally which gives more protective barrier to your skin. It also helps protect the cells and enable them to hold onto water. The red, inflamed reaction is your body’s way of trying to heal and calm the skin by rushing in blood to heal, flush out the toxins (e.g. the artificial chemicals) or what has caused this process in the first place.
